Storms come into every life. Sometimes they come suddenly, other times they brew quietly until they overwhelm us. A sickness that drains your strength. A betrayal that breaks your heart. A financial crisis that leaves you gasping for breath.
In those moments, it can feel like the wind is too strong, the rain too heavy, and the night too long. But even in the fiercest storm, God always provides a candle—a small but steady light to remind us we are not alone.
This is the story of Grace, a young woman who discovered the power of God’s light in the darkest storm of her life.
The Storm Breaks
Grace was 26 when her world fell apart. Her father, the family’s breadwinner, passed away unexpectedly from a stroke. Within months, her family slipped into financial chaos. Bills piled up, school fees became impossible, and every day felt like an endless downpour of worry.
On top of that, Grace lost her job due to company downsizing. The rejection emails stung. Her friends stopped checking in. Nights were the hardest. She often lay awake whispering into the silence, “God, are You even there? Why won’t You stop this storm?”
“Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” – Psalm 10:1
Her prayers felt unanswered, and her faith flickered like a candle about to go out.
The Candle Appears
One particularly heavy evening, Grace sat in darkness. Power had been cut off because her family couldn’t pay the bills. She lit a single candle. As the flame danced in the shadows, she thought, “This tiny light shouldn’t matter in all this darkness… yet it does.”
At that moment, a memory surfaced: a Sunday school teacher had once told her, “Jesus is the Light of the world. Even in darkness, His light will shine.”
She reached for her dusty Bible and opened it at random. Her eyes landed on this verse:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5
It was as if God Himself had whispered hope into her storm. The candle wasn’t just wax and fire—it was a reminder that Christ’s light still burned in her life.
A Flicker of Hope
The days didn’t magically get easier. But Grace began to notice the “candles” God placed around her:
- A neighbor who dropped off food when she thought there’d be none.
- A church member who quietly paid her younger brother’s school fees.
- A scripture that leapt from the page at just the right moment.
- A worship song on the radio that spoke directly to her weary heart.
These little “candles” didn’t stop the storm, but they kept her standing until the storm passed.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” – Psalm 27:1
The Storm Clears
Months later, Grace was offered a position at an NGO that supported widows and fatherless families. It paid less than her old job, but it was fulfilling beyond measure. She had walked through her storm, and now God was using her to light candles in the lives of others who were hurting.
Looking back, she realized something: “If I had never gone through that storm, I would never have known how bright God’s light could shine in the darkness.”
Lessons From the Candle in the Storm
- God’s light is stronger than any darkness.
The storm may rage, but it cannot snuff out Christ’s light in your life. - God places “candles” around us.
They may be people, scripture, songs, or small mercies—reminders that He is near. - You can be someone’s candle.
Just as Grace found help through others, we are called to be light in someone else’s storm. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matthew 5:14 - Storms reveal the strength of God’s presence.
Without storms, we might never realize how much we depend on His light.
When You Face Your Storm
Maybe you’re reading this in the middle of your own storm—broken, overwhelmed, and unsure if you can make it. Remember this: God’s light has not left you. His presence is your candle in the storm.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.” – Isaiah 43:2
A Call to Christ
The greatest storm is life without God. But Jesus came to be our eternal Light. He said:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12
You don’t have to walk through storms alone. Pray this today:
“Lord Jesus, I am in the storm and I need Your light. Shine into my heart, forgive my sins, and guide me through. I surrender my life to You. Amen.”
Final Thought
Storms are temporary, but Christ’s light is eternal. Grace’s story reminds us that even a single candle can drive back the night. And when that candle is Christ Himself, no storm can ever overcome you.
